Birds can be a major problem for grape growers. If left untreated, they can devastate your harvest. However, there are a number of ways you can keep birds and other pests away from your crop while still getting to enjoy it.
1. Use a grape protection bag
Paper bags are an inexpensive, simple and effective way to protect your crops from birds, possums and other pests. These bags are a great alternative to traditional netting or covers because they're easily disposable and don't require a post-harvest clean-up like a netting system can.
These bags can be purchased online, in garden nurseries or craft stores, and at many grocery stores as well. They come in a variety of sizes, so you can find one that will fit your vines perfectly.
2. Use tulle to protect your grapes
Tulle is a great, cheap and easy way to protect your grapes from birds, flies and other pests. You can purchase tulle online, at a craft store or at a nursery. Once you have tulle, it's just a matter of attaching it to the vines with clothespins.
3. Use organza bags to protect your grapes
Another option is to use protective bags made from translucent fabric, like organza. These bags are a great choice for protecting your fruits from bugs because they don't absorb light and they allow the clusters to breathe. They also don't add additional weight to the grapes, which can make them less likely to crack.
4. Use a bird net or scare tape
If you don't have any other methods to protect your grapes, then a bird net can be a great way to keep pests out. You can purchase bird netting online or at a nursery, but it's best to get netting with smaller openings (1/2"') so that the fruit doesn't fall through.
5. Use a grape bag for ripening your fruit
For the last few years, we've been using a grape protection bag to ripen our grapes before we pick them. This is a great way to save money on your grape harvest and it also helps preserve the health of your crop because it prevents pests from damaging the fruits. The bags also help to control fungi and bacteria, which can cause diseases such as black spot and mildew.
